Canker sores are a type of mouth ulcers, but they are different from cold sores in a number of ways. The most significant is that they're not contagious. Also, canker sores do not appear on your lips as they're located on the inside of the mouth. However, despite them not being as serious or as contagious as cold sores, they often garner a lot of your attention due to how painful they can be.
These mouth ulcers can be found near your lips, on the inside of your cheeks, on your gums or tongue, below your tongue and on the soft palate, otherwise known as the roof of the mouth. They're usually round or oval and tend to be white or yellow with a red border. Their size can vary a bit with larger ones tending to be more painful and taking longer to heal. Note that you might experience a burning or tingling sensation roughly 24-48 hours before one appears.
Researchers have struggled to discern what causes these mouth ulcers to form. Some theories are related to low B12, iron, zinc or folate consumption, adverse reactions to spicy foods, nuts, eggs, chocolate or cheese, hormone fluctuations, mouth injuries and stress. They might also be the result of complications related to inflammatory bowel diseases, damaged immune systems, celiac disease or Behcet's disease.
Although canker sores tend to disappear 7-10 days after forming, the pain can make it difficult to wait that long. Many have reported experiencing relief after applying creams or gels that contain benzocaine, fluocinonide and hydrogen peroxide while mouthwashes with dexamethasone may help as well. In more significant cases, some use steroid medications or engage in cautery.
