Dentists recommend brushing the teeth twice each day, but say brushing alone is not enough for optimum oral health. Brushing removes particles from the front and back surfaces of teeth, but not in between the teeth or under the gums. That is why flossing once each day is essential for good oral hygiene.
1. Flossing helps prevent cavities.
Flossing and brushing, remove harmful bacteria that cause teeth to decay and form cavities. Plaque, the sticky, bacteria-containing film that coats teeth, starts to harden a few hours after eating, so it is important to floss daily. If flossing is skipped for a few days, the plaque becomes too hard to remove by regular flossing.
Flossing correctly is important. The floss needs to be firmly held between the thumb and finger and then slid gently in between each tooth and working beneath the gum line in the front and back. Daily flossing helps prevent cavities.
2. Flossing can prevent halitosis.
Flossing is one of the simplest ways to prevent bad breath. It removes the particles before they decay and cause halitosis. This leaves the mouth feeling cleaner and fresher.
3. Flossing promotes healthy gums.
Without flossing, plaque builds up on teeth and can cause periodontal diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis occurs when gums become inflamed and bleed during brushing. Gingivitis, when neglected, leads to periodontitis which is much more serious. Soft tissue and bone supporting the tooth are damaged and teeth are lost. Plaque and tartar increase the risk for cardiovascular disease, especially for individuals who are diabetic or have artificial heart valves. Flossing promotes healthy gums and can prevent gum disease.
4. Flossing makes your smile look brighter.
Flossing removes plaque and keeps tartar from forming. Plaque and tartar, which are usually yellow or brown discolor and dull the teeth. Without plaque and tartar build-up, teeth look cleaner and the smile looks brighter. Not only will individuals have better dental hygiene, but they will also have greater self-confidence and better overall health from daily flossing.
