At our dental clinic in Richmond Hill, we are sometimes asked whether using mouthwash can replace flossing. Patients wonder whether mouthwash is good enough. Both mouthwash and floss do clean between your teeth, but mouthwash doesn't replace flossing. It is best to use both.
What is Mouthwash?
Mouthwash is a liquid used to clean your teeth, mouth, and gums. It often contains ingredients such as alcohol and antimicrobials. These are meant to kill and limit the growth of harmful bacteria. For best results, you should wait at least half an hour after brushing and flossing to use mouthwash. Using it immediately after brushing can rinse away the fluoride from your toothpaste. Some mouthwashes do contain fluoride. You can use these directly after brushing and flossing. At our dental clinic in Richmond Hill, we also recommend using mouthwash after eating when brushing your teeth isn’t an option. Mouthwash can help slow the growth of harmful bacterial in a pinch and freshen your breath.
What is Floss?
Floss usually comes in a roll in a container. There are also floss picks and water flossers. Floss also comes in flavoured and unflavoured varieties and in waxed and unwaxed. All of these types do have their advantages. It is up to you and your oral health professionals to decide what is best for you. Floss is used to dislodge food particles and clean in-between teeth. Brushing misses these pieces, as does mouthwash. Leaving these particles promotes the growth of harmful bacteria that lead to cavities and other oral health problems. However, you must learn to floss properly for optimal results. Be sure to floss at least once per day.
Flossing is essential, mouthwash is helpful. Only flossing can fully remove plaque and food build up in-between teeth. Mouthwash can only do so much. Both do have their place. We often notice at our dental clinic in Richmond Hill that those who use both have the healthiest mouth. A clean mouth will make you smile a little brighter.
