As dental professionals, we play a crucial role in screening for sleep apnea and providing effective treatment options, particularly for mild to moderate cases of OSA, or as an alternative to CPAP for those who struggle with it. Our focus is on providing non-invasive, comfortable solutions that work by keeping your airway open while you sleep.
At Yonge & Seven Dental Care, we offer custom-fabricated oral appliance therapy, a highly effective and comfortable treatment for many individuals struggling with snoring and sleep apnea.
While dentists do not diagnose sleep apnea (a diagnosis typically comes from a sleep physician after a sleep study), we often work in close collaboration with your physician. If you suspect you have sleep apnea, we can discuss your symptoms and, if appropriate, recommend you for a sleep study. Once diagnosed, we can then discuss whether an oral appliance is the right solution for you as part of your comprehensive treatment plan.
For many patients suffering from mild-to-moderate sleep apnea, or those who are completely intolerant of bulky, loud CPAP machines, custom-engineered Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) is a highly effective, incredibly comfortable alternative.
Worn exclusively while you sleep, these small, discreet devices gently position your lower jaw slightly forward. This subtle movement keeps your tongue and soft throat tissues from collapsing backward, keeping your airway completely open and unobstructed all night long.
At Yonge and Seven Dental Care, Dr. Kamalbake specializes primarily in the elite Panthera Anti-Snoring Device:
Crucial Clinical Requirement: Because Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a serious medical condition, it must be officially diagnosed by a qualified physician. Your journey begins with a referral to a specialized sleep clinic for an official sleep study (polysomnography). A sleep physician will analyze your diagnostic sleep clinic data to determine the severity of your apnea and write the required medical prescription for an oral sleep appliance.
Once your medical diagnosis is confirmed, you will visit our Richmond Hill office. We perform a thorough clinical evaluation of your teeth, gums, and jaw joints (TMJ), followed by our ultra-precise 3D digital intraoral scanning to capture your structural records.
Once your custom-milled Panthera appliance arrives, you will return for a personalized fitting. Dr. Kamalbake will ensure the device sits perfectly and remains secure. At this visit, you will also receive your custom morning aligner (positioner), an essential tool used to keep your natural bite properly aligned after a night of jaw advancement.
Your jaw muscles will be given time to adapt. Over periodic, short follow-up visits, we can carefully adjust the titration straps on your appliance to incrementally advance your jaw to its optimal, healthiest airway opening.
Because your sleep device holds your lower jaw forward for several hours overnight, your jaw joints and chewing muscles need to be safely guided back into their normal daytime positions.
The Routine: Upon waking, remove your Panthera sleep appliance. Wait 10 to 20 minutes to allow your jaw muscles to relax naturally.
The Exercise: Place your custom morning aligner over your teeth. Gently and firmly clench down onto the aligner for 10 to 20 minutes. This simple morning exercise re-seats your jaw joints properly, prevents long-term bite shifting, and ensures your teeth meet exactly the way they are supposed to.
Daily Morning Cleaning: Immediately after removing your devices, brush them thoroughly using a soft-bristled toothbrush and lukewarm water.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Never use toothpaste, alcohol-based mouthwashes, dish soap, or boiling water on your appliance. Toothpaste contains abrasive particles that can scratch the smooth polymer surface, creating microscopic grooves where bacteria can accumulate.
Deep Sanitization: Twice a week, submerge your appliance in a dedicated dental appliance cleaning tablet solution for 15 to 20 minutes to fully sanitize and dissolve any stubborn plaque or calcium buildup.
Proper Storage: Always rinse the device thoroughly after cleaning and let it air-dry completely. Store it safely inside its protective ventilation case, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and family pets.
